Turmeric’s Role in Relieving Respiratory Related Issues, Pain & Fatigue

by Cathy Fleming 30 Jun 2020 0 Comments

For thousands of years, many cultures have used natural plant-based remedies to help resolve ailments. Turmeric, a spice, has been used in the Ayurvedic culture and as an Indian cooking spice for centuries. Medical science is now beginning to recognize Turmeric as an essential spice with valuable properties. Curcumin is the orange-yellowish component in turmeric gives it anti-inflammatory properties.

Turmeric and Lung Ailments

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is most common in smokers. In a study published in the Oxford University Press, researchers gave mice with COPD like lung inflammation and lung cancer progression daily curcumin supplements. Scientists found that turmeric reduced the inflammation in the lungs of the mice giving them better-breathing capacity.

It also helped prevent tumor formation on other parts of the body but did not reduce the lungs' tumors. Researchers did note that the mice received lower doses of the spice.

A study with baby mice examined inflammation caused by the overproduction of mucus due to allergies, such as seen with asthma. Researchers induced asthma conditions causing lung inflammation and then gave them curcumin. Researchers discovered that curcumin helped reduce the mucus and swelling in the respiratory tract of the mice.

Pain

Because it reduces inflammation, turmeric may also help relieve pain. Ninety volunteers who needed the removal of an impacted molar participated in a clinical study. When the effects of the anesthesia wore off, participants took either curcumin or a placebo. They reported their pain an hour later.

Both groups felt a reduction in pain; however, the group that took the curcumin reported significantly less pain.

Fatigue

In a study, scientists tested mice with chronic fatigue syndrome. They measured oxidative stress levels brought on by immune system fatigue. The mice were given curcumin and assessed again. Oxidative stress was much lower, and there was improved mobility.
