Turmeric May Help Fight Heart Disease
Heart disease is the number one cause of death around the world. It’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic effects may help protect the cardiovascular system.
Turmeric and Heart Disease
Turmeric may help correct some of the damage done to blood vessels by inflammation, reversing some of the heart disease processes. It accomplishes this by assisting the endothelium, the lining of the blood vessels.
The lining of the blood vessels helps keep your blood flowing, and it releases vasopressin, which helps open up the blood vessels. When you eat a poor diet and don’t exercise, along with other factors, your blood vessels become sticky and clogged up, restricting blood flow.
When this happens, you are susceptible to having a heart attack or stroke. Studies indicate that curcumin can help with endothelial function.
A study involving 32 postmenopausal women experimented with turmeric and age-related risk of heart disease. The women went into one of three groups. They took either curcumin, did aerobic exercise, or did nothing.
Researchers saw changes in the dilation of blood vessels with both the curcumin group and the exercise group. The control group did not have any measurable changes in the dilation of blood vessels.
In another study, researchers looked at a group of patients with type 2 diabetes. The increase in blood sugar from type 2 diabetes causes damage to blood vessels, which causes the vessels to dysfunction. The common source of treatment is ACE inhibitor drugs, statin drugs, or antioxidants.
The participants in the study received either two 150mg of curcumin, a statin drug, or a placebo. The curcumin and statin group showed improvement in endothelium function, and the placebo group showed no improvement. Researchers concluded that curcumin was just as effective as the statin drug at improving the function of blood vessels.
After bypass surgery, patients who take curcumin may reduce their risk of having a heart attack.
If you have heart disease, consult with your physician before using turmeric.
