Ginger and Its Many Benefits in Fighting Pain
Ginger is a common natural remedy used for centuries as a natural remedy for a variety of ailments. Research indicates that ginger may be useful in relieving pain. The spice has anti-inflammatory properties and analgesic properties that can help ease muscle and back pain.
Chronic pain is a pain that lasts beyond the healing of the tissue. A systematic review published in 2015 looked at studies having to do with ginger and pain relief.
Arthritis
A few studies looked at lower doses of ginger. Participants took 510mg of ginger to help relieve pain. The ginger group reported less pain than before they started taking ginger regularly.
Another study examined a higher dose of ginger. Participants consumed 1000mg of ginger to help relieve chronic knee pain. The study compared to ginger to diclofenac, which is a medication prescribed for the reduction of pain and inflammation due to arthritis.
Participants who took the ginger reported a reduction in pain during walking. Compared to anti-inflammatory drugs, the results showed that ginger was just as effective in relieving arthritis pain as some medicines that are prescribed by doctors.
Muscle Soreness
One study looked at the effects of ginger on pain from participants who had excessively exercised. Volunteers for the study took either 2,000mg of ginger or a placebo. The group that took the ginger reported less delayed onset muscle pain than the placebo group.
Menstrual Cramps
A controlled trial found that women who took 1500mg of ginger had significantly less pain due to cramps during menstruation. There are only two studies recorded for this type of pain; however, the other study also found that ginger reduced the pain of menstrual cramps.
Back Pain
Because of its properties, ginger may also be able to relieve back pain. As an anti-inflammatory, it can help with back and neck pain associated with arthritis. It’s analgesic properties can help relieve muscle-related pain.
Although NSAIDs are the primary class of drugs prescribed by doctors, they can come with a lot of side effects, including upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, and gas. The most common side effect of ginger reported is heartburn, making it an excellent remedy to use for back pain.
